Default What questions should you ask a care agency to understand the quality of its services

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out the best way to get help for my dad who’s been struggling at home lately. He still wants to stay in his house in Philly, but laundry, meals, and just getting around the house are becoming harder for him to manage on his own. We’ve talked about hiring someone, but I’m not even sure what the right kind of help is called or what questions I should be asking. If someone here has worked with a caregiver before, what should I expect and how did you start the search?

I totally get your situation — my family went through the same thing with my grandma not long ago. What helped us was actually learning what the caregiver role involves so we knew exactly what we were looking for. A caregiver typically assists with everyday tasks like bathing, meals, mobility, and companionship, which sounds very close to what your dad needs. I found a resource Caregiver Jobs Philadelphia that explains the caregiver role in detail here: Caregiver Jobs PA. It helped us understand what caregivers do and what questions to ask when talking to agencies or candidates. Once we knew that, everything felt much clearer and less intimidating.

I’m just reading through this because the topic hits pretty close to home. I don’t have direct experience hiring a caregiver yet, but my neighbor went through something similar with his mom, and I remember how much trial and error there was at the beginning. A lot of it seemed to come down to patience and figuring things out step by step, not all at once. From the outside, it looked like once they stopped rushing and started asking more practical questions, things slowly fell into place. Threads like this are helpful even if you’re just observing and learning ahead of time.
