ok I have a question.I have run th400s 3 pseeds for 20 years and always started in 1st and went to third gear before rolling out of the box.Is this wrong to do.I have never broken a trans or even a hint of problems. Not questioning or saying anyone is wrong this is just info I would like to know.Should you start in second if its a manual valvebody and if its not you will have to start in first..Please clarify...thanks
Well, if you knew anything about transmissions, you'd know to NEVER do a burnout in 1st gear with a 3-speed transmission.

When the 1-2 shift occurs in a non-loaded condition, such as a burnout, the low roller sprag can over speed and fail, causing a catastrophic failure like the one you encountered.

The same failure can happen if there is a driveshaft or rear end failure at any point when power is being applied.

The same failure can occur when you shift into neutral at the top end of the track.

If the drum failed, how would they know it was cracked prior? How do you know the low roller sprag didn't fail when you did an improper burnout?
Just fixing the last post so you know what part to read
