Valve lash cold/hot

I have a new to me 582 -- the builder says valve lash is .016 hot. My question is...

I am changing the lifters= I have a Jesel setup-- so i have to remove the assembly... now when i put it togther i want to lash it somewhat close being cold.. as i cant start it yet ..im waiting on some odds and ends but i would like to have it close.. What should i set the lash at cold if the builder has said 016 hot?

Thanks In advance
Keith

Question, does it have aluminum or cast iron heads?

Close is about all your gonna get till you can figure out just how much growth your dealing with.

I would to set them all on .011 to 010 cold.

Start it, let it get good & warm, re-set them 'hot' let it cool, check again.
Make note of the lash 'cold' - then you you can set them 'cold' all the time.

On my motor, BBC 496 W/ cast iron heads.

I set all mine @ .022 cold, calls for 28 and 30 hot, never had any issues.

I set mine at .016 cold and they are around .021-.022 hot. Iron block aluminum heads. BBC.

Mine are .26/.26 @ op. temp. Sorry guys, but you know I am learning too, so here is what I do not get: If metal EXPANDS when hot, why is the lash LESS cold? If metal expands, should you allow for more LESS lash when cold? I don't get that!! Should the heat provide less tolerance in itself? For this confusion/reason, I never set mine cold. Until I understand this, I will not take a chance.

Wish I could help you here scooter, But i've been setting my lash, the WRONG way, for forty years.

LOOL!!! I have been setting mine for 5 years, the wrong way too. Broken a few poly-locks, second guessed it, gone back & done it again. But if metal expands, why less tolerance when cold??? I thought it was a valid question from a rookie at best. Scoot

Easy test Scoot, Set your lash with the motor hot, Let the motor cool, till it's dead cold, and check them again. don't reset them. Fire the motor and let it come to operating temp. again and check them one more time. Don't touch the adjustment, after you set it the first time. I'll bet the flea circus, it'll be tighter cold, especially if you have aluminum heads. I set mine, .022 hot, or .018 cold. samey same. Scooter, don't tell no one, I learnt this from an ex Ford mechanic.

Aluminum heads or block or both will grow with heat more than steel, so the top of the heads are moving away from the cam more the lifters and pushrods are growing. Some motors with aluminum block and heads have no lash or less when cold.My aluminun high port heads go from .014 to .022 cold to hot.Bill.
