35 spline alxe free play question

i was running strange 35 spline spool and axles, and just got from moser a new set of axles with the 5/8 studs. the play is sloppier than the original strange axles. i put a dial indicator on the stud and came up with .032 thousands of play. does any one know what is axceeptable. i just dont want to go by what mosher says.

Sorry but MOSER sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! David.(what did moser say is ok?)

you can call strange for tech, their good guys http://www.strangeengineering.net/
or
tom's differential, good knowledge
http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/
let me know what worked, that does sound like alot of play, never
had that problem, good luck

My Moser's are sloppy,too.Never measured it(will now  )but don't think it's that bad.My buddy's Strange's are tight.Can you get too tight?

moser

I agree, moser sucks!!!! I only buy strange axles!!! They are very sloppy and from my history, they are weaker than any other axle i have ever had even stock ford.

From what I understand Mosier parts vs Strange Parts are not interchangable.. Like using Mosier Axles in a strange spool ect.
Have not tried it but that is what I had been told at one time.
Have you talked to Strange about this? If it were me I would just to get their opinion.

when i ordered the axles from moser, they asked who's spool i was useing and i said strange. i did call strange today and they said up to 3/32 of an inch. tats aprx .090

Me too. I don't have any concerns...

itsabird 05-28-2008 04:50 PM

i think that it,s mark williams that won,t interchange.

i would think 35 spline is 35 spline no matter who make it. i have a strange spool & moser axles, i've never had a problem.(knock on wood) :)

You may be right on that.. It has been awhile since I done my rearend so I guess I forgot...

i don't have enough room in my head to remember everything either.

axel

Williams has a different spline than Moser. Thet are not interchange with each other. Moser has a more coarse spline.

just don't make since to me how you can the same diameter axle(35 spline) and have a coarser or finer spline. can someone school me on this because to me in my head if you had the same spine axle(one coarse & one fine) the coase one would have to have a bigger diameter and to me better.mw stuff has to be better than moser right?thanks for any info on this.

John,

It is the pitch and the angle used to cut the splines that are different. The diameters and the number of splines are the same. Kind of hard to explain, but the "valley" between the splines on some are more narrow which can make the "peak" of the spline a little wider.
