I had one built with a standard deck 454 block. The 496ci was accomplished with an .060 overbore and 4.25" stroker crank as for the 454's crank measures 4.00".

The only difference I know of between a 9.8 or tall deck block is,on my 496 I used the short deck, which put my wrist pin right thru my oil control ring. That was with a 6.385" rod. Tall deck you can avoid that,I believe.Doesn't hurt anything at all.

What do people turn these 496 too? My brother is looking at one with eagle forged crank and h beam rods? I was just wondering with that long of a arm. I told him we will proably have to take the 5.14 out. He turns his 402 bbc to 7600 in the 1/4. thanks
|
I wouldnt turn it 7600 do the rods have the good L19 bolts or no ?
I personally wouldnt want to take it over 7200-7300 |
That I do not know. He just called me yesterday about it. I told him probably try to keep it around 7000 so I was close. I will try ti find out what bolts are in it. Do you know of any pistons for sale ? I think this guy has the block, crank, and rods only. I told him not to offer too much because i've seen assembled ones from Nye's for 2700 something on here. Thanks for the reply David.

Nye's has very good prices and are good to deal with.

thanks Many say you cannot bore one this much but i am proving this theory wrong..Block has been .125 over since 1997..i have had it 3 yrs its been refreshen and i run the piss out of it..gas and alcohol.. i have also heard that the (512) casting is a little more beefy than some other castings...i don't know about that...some of the guru's on here can enlighten on this subject....check your castings on that motor before paying him.. so yes..the stock 454 block can be a 496ci no problem..and bigger. We ran our 505 (4.350 x 4.25 stroke) at 7500 RPM for 8 years with the blower on top.
This was with a Cola crank and Oliver rods (3.5 Arp Pro Series Bolts) If you had a tall deck, I have a set of 13:1 JE pistons (7 of them) for a good price. |

The quick way to ID the tall deck is look at the water pump mounting holes in the front of the block. You can see the extra .400" sticking up right there. 8) JB

I turn mine to 6800 every pass.Cam/valvetrain rated to 7500.Have run a few times shifting at 7500,just keeps pulling!!Machinist who setup up the motor said it was good for more.Mine is 2 bolt block with ARP studs and stock caps. You'd be amazed what a prpoerly balanced/clearanced/assembled motor will survive reliably.I'd be more concerned with valvetrain parts( good caps and pushrods) more than anything else
