Big Chevy Oil choices
 

I was considering changing to a synthetic oil. I keep hearing some very different ideas on the subject. This is for my bracket car. 454+30 12.8 CR, roller etc. What do you guys use on your race motors?

Where can I get the brad penn oil from? never heard of it around here in Mississippi, I read up on it and it sound really good.
Also what viscosity do y'all recomend run for dragraing?? Thx Charles

Joe Gibbs XP3 is worth some H.P. over the Penn oil,usually 2-2.5% on my dyno.Bill

If you can't find BRAD PENN in your area BRAD PENN has a website and if you contact them they will tell you where to get some.

>Billhendren... please don't take this the wrong way, I am not insulting you, or the product that you suggested in any way, but I wouldn't judge an oil by what the dyno says , if I put brake fluid in a motor and it gained on a dyno doesn't mean that I would run it in my race car, what good is an extra couple of horsepower if the bearings don't live? Friends of mine and I run Brad Penn in blown alcohol and blown nitro cars with excellent results.

Well guys I am going to Chevron Dello 400 as of last week. Not really that interested in a few extra hp with lighter oil.Horsepower is something I have no problems in getting. I have done lots of oil chemical studying over the past few months and 15 - 40 grade is my choice. We will see.

All I run is Dello 400 15-40.
I like it.
I run my engine about a 1/2 quart low with windage tray and oil pressure is constant 60-80 psi normal, 40-60 psi hot.

When I change oil it is still fairly golden in color.

Hey Ed, Tommy Costales at Houston Engine & Balance is very high on Dello oil also. He suggest to his customers that they use it also.

Haven't talked to Tommy in several years. Last time I talked with him we were racing together lol. way back in the mid 1700's. Nope'' Come to think of it, I did talk to him one day at Ennis in 1986 or 87. I think it was 86.and I had no car there. lol

Thx for the info though. Glad to see that maybe I am not as nuts as it sounds about making this change.

The question wasn't about a Blown alky or Nitro engine,it was a bracket engine. The Gibbs oil was developed for racing use only and they spent millions on it. the Nextel Cup cars run 500 miles at full throttle making 830 H.P. and have NO bearing problems.probably 60/70% of the cars run this oil.we have used it for two years in all our normally aspirated engines because our own Dyno tests showed it was superior to any dinosaur oil out there. the 2-2.5 percent gain in H.P. was from friction reduction.You would be surprised at the gain in lifespan of roller lifters.
There is nothing wrong with the Brad Penn oil especially when you throw it out every run or two in a blown alky or Nitro engine,we used it for years but time marches on,look how much computers change in three years,engines are the same,if you want to stay on top you need constant R&D and oil is a big part of it.you cant afford to give up 2 percent of your power these days.Bill www.joegibbsracingoil.com

Updates afteer talking to my Oil Chemist rcently acquired friend/vendor

Chevron Rpm Dello 400 Low Emmissions has had zinc removed mostly.
Shell Rotella T LE has had most zincs removed.

Shell Rotella T HD is still good to go with what we need in zinc additives

Chevron RPM Dello 400 Multi-Grade is good to go and has additives we need such as the zinc in original content.

Boy that can get mis-leading.


For us stuck in the dark ages still insisting on Fossil Fuel Oil Crudes;

Use only viscosities of 15-40 or 15w-40
The W is not weight. W stands ofr winter lubrication qualities.

Napa has a Napa Oil also with the good stuff. It is not passanger car oil it is Commercial Diesel Truck grade oil. Stay away from the AutoZone Coastal Diesel Oils.

In all oils used for racing and performance look for this;
A funny looking donut shape on the container.

IN the center look for CI-4-SL api
Around the outer edge of the donut shape look for;
CG-4-SH
or
CH-4-SJ

That donut looking shape should be on allo oils but will be for sure on Commercial Grade Oils that are 15-40 oils.

I did not know that the Dello 400 had most of the zinc removed....I will def change to the Chevron RPM Dello 400 Multi-Grade 15-40.

I also use K&N oil filters.

Where do you get this chevron Dello 400 15-40 oil? David.

I have found it at Napa and Autozone.

A non synthetic oil to run is Napa IMO its a good oil. I've been told Valvoline makes it for them though. Just cheaper then the Valvoline.

Here is some interesting reading on oil if anyone is interested. I have been trying to do some research on my own and I thought this might help someone. Some of you may have already seen this. I have been looking into the Amsoil products, have any of you used them before?
