Bought motor w/trans

I bought a motor an trans combo an was used but not as described . It has a large amount of blowby ,ticking slight knock with metallic in oil . I drove all the way to michigan an rented a van which all together costed me 1000 (700 for the seller an van rental + gas) . complete waste of time an money ! heres the link http://www.racingjunk.com/post/88622...turbo-350.html

chevguy65 06-26-2007 10:45 AM

I am sorry but what seems to be the issue?

The ad states "I just removed the original strong running 400/350 from my 1971 impala! Its a little dirty, with 109,XXX miles. 4bolt main block, two barrel carb. price includes engine, trans, dist, exhaust man, waterpump! thanks for looking"

Does it not run strong?
Were you expecting a new engine for $800.00 plus the trans?

It has over 100,000 miles.

For a complete engine and trans I think what you paid is in the ballpark, considering I have seen 400 blocks bare go for as much as $500.00.

Did he misrepresent anything about it not smoking or that it was a rebuilt engine? Is it a 4 bolt main? Did he tell you it had no knocks?
Had he checked the oil for metal filings?

When you drove down and picked it up di you check the oil on it for metal?
I would have pulled the pan and tried to hook it up and test fired it.

Were you just going to run this motor as is or did you plan on rebuilding it?

Please clarify where he has misreprented what he sold to you.

Thanks

i am with Carl on this one...the motor was advertsied as the orginal motor out of a 1971 automobile (36 yrs old)....come one man...it even looked like a dinosaur in the picture..you could not have expected much more than this.....i think you did good on the price..the traveling expenses were a little harsh but thats not the sellers fault.......

sorry but i cannot see where a motor was mis-represented at being 36 yrs old and ( orginal ).....my carb cost $400 more than the entire package you purchased..

let me ask you a question anbd please be honest:

WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING ? AND DID YOU READ THE SAME AD I READ WITH THE PICS ETC...

Thanks- brian

illss welcome to Racing Junk hope you will hang around and learn some good lessons as we all do from this great site. I would just like to say that if your engine an trans that you bought for $800.00 with 109xxx miles and 36 years old and all original lasted longer then 8 mins then you have done better then some people that spent a lot more on a new engine. I would think that the ticking sound would be from a weak lifter so maybe you could change the oil and filter and run it 300 or 400 miles and then change the filter again and put some good oil treatment in it to help with the blow by. I would not use this engine for drag racing. Thanks again for telling us your story and enjoy the site.

lively 06-26-2007 11:49 AM

SOUNDS LIKE A FAIR DEAL TO ME 8) 8) 100,000 MILES IS JUST BROKE IN GOOD AND WELL SEASONED TO GET A GOOD ENGINE OUT OF!---MY 2 CENTS

alscoupe 06-26-2007 12:05 PM

I'm with all the guys, Lively, Brain, Carl and Wes. And add that you can't count anything but gas for travel, you should have your own truck or tag along to start with. No sympathy on this one.

lotsof454sss 06-26-2007 12:37 PM

Well I guess I might as well add the PIGS opinion here also...I looked at the ad and there is no way I would have given $200 for the whole thing had it been in "my city"...I am sorry but just look at it and consider its age and he clearly states it is original and has over 100k miles on it...Now had you been buying the engine behind it that is covered with plastic you would have stolen a deal...But I think you must have gottten excited and made an error in judgement on this one...Of course I do have to add, the guy that placed the ad has a set of big gonads to fish that deep with that picture and description he used and scored $800 with it...What a fisherman he is...Oh, and please do not be offended or think we are a bunch of smart alecs but you asked and we are being sincere so please hang around and get to know all of the folks on this site..

lively 06-26-2007 02:03 PM

GEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!--NEWS FLASH---THE MAN WITH THE BIG GONADS HAS BEEN A MEMBER FOR OVER 2 YEARS!!!!!---I HOPE HE MAKES AN HONOR PAYMENT WITH SOME OF THAT LOOSE MONEY   :shock:STOP IT LIVELY ,STOP IT

SST4530 06-26-2007 03:20 PM

I got to say it doesn't sound like he misrepresented anything to me. If it actually runs your lucky! A good 400 block, heads and rebuildable trans would cost that much if you bought them individually. Doesn't sound like a bad deal accept for the travel expense. Think I would have found something closer to home. Not sure what you expected 109,000 miles and being original. :?

illss 06-26-2007 04:26 PM

Yeah i got a great deal !!! I explained to him that i need a replacement an he stated that it was good !! My old motor had blow-by etc. an it was in better shape than this one was . I didnt need the tranny an he wouldnt sell motor seperately an needed something quick . He stated the it just needed a wash an valve cover gaskets when it's really a rebulidable core which i already had .

bjuice 06-26-2007 04:42 PM

did 1971 orginal motor not ring a bell..did the picture in the ad not confirm the bell that was ringing.....i am not trying to be hard on you at all...but dude if you know much about motors etc... you should have known this motor should have been in the same shape as yours if not worse..
do you know what BLOW-BY is and why it happens ?

you could have got a BRAND-NEW GM CRATE MOTOR for under 2k and picked it up at youyr local chevrolet dealer.

simple fact is ya gotta have an idea what your buying or get somone who knows....2nd..maybe the motor did run good to the seller..i know many people who runs their truck engines etc with blow by and is very happy with it...

i think the seller did himself a BIG IN-JUSTICE by selling the orginal number matching motor out of his 71 IMPALA..if you hold on to it long enough and keep the sellers info you might be able to sell it back to him double what you paid him once he finds out how bad the car was de-valued without the original motor...

and 109k miles for a 36 year old motor means 3,027 miles a year ..which is highly un-likley in itself...these are the kinds of common sense questions you must ask yourself..the picture of the motor tells me there is a minimum of 250k on the motor if not more...and if its orIginal you can bet eveything in the motor is SHOT or close to being SHOT..

that all i will say on this...good luck to ya

Brian

alscoupe 06-26-2007 06:18 PM

Ditto Brian!

And, just for future reference, if it's a stock replacement daily driver, 99 times outta 100, your better off to rebuild what you've got. Even if you gotta pay a local shade tree (like me) to do the mech-a-neck work, dependent on a good block and rotating assembly; rings, bearings, gaskets, a head job, and labor; you'd of been out $1500 to $2500, running in a week to 10 days, just like off the showroom.

Now, i'm done too.

illss 06-26-2007 07:40 PM

Point is bells or not he lied an im screwed . The motor sux an yes i will buy a crate motor (new) with warranty if i should decide to keep the chevelle . Honestly this has made me think about selling it . Thanks for being hard an honest an now i know next time . No hard feelings an thanks .

Ok the temptation is to great I can't resist.
First off. You didn't get screwed, instead you screwed yourself, I mean cmon man think about?
Did you do any comparitive shopping?
Did you do the math? Calcualting the gas money it would take to drive there and back plus van rental fees? Did you check the local junkyards for a running 350? Chances are you drove past hundreds on the way there.
800 bucks maybe was on the high side, but think about what you got?
A std bore 400 4 bolt, highly deseriable block around my parts.
A bare one would bring 300 to 400 easy, not to mention those choice double hump heads all the stock dirt racers are looking for. I could get 200 bucks for them alone.
A good 350 turbo tranny which I'm sure you could sell in local paper for a couple hundred bucks.
Lastly, It was a high mileage, 36 year old motor sold as is. What the hell? You were expecting it to be a tight motor with no blow by?
Not that's just too funny. Believe me, you really opened ur self up for critisism here man, sorry no pity party for you on this one,
can you feel the love? Welcome to the forum. Charles

To answer ur questions yes i did shop around and got quotes from local machine shops and the best price i got was 1650 to rebuild my old one or 1650 for a rebuilt (350 2 bolt main) one plus core charge for a 350 cause no one had 400s an wouldnt take them as cores either . I've looked for 3 weeks on ebay to find something local an i checked craigslist then i got referred here an i got nailed here end of story . I did check junk yards since i happen to be in the auto industry an yet nothing so it was either SAVE up an wait which i wish i had did or believe this GUY an i did an BAM !!!!! I posted not for pity but to leave a feedback an my side of the story an i believe im in the right section of the forum .

If it was such a bad deal or something then why didnt anyone push to report the ad if it was so bad an obvious ? I learned from my mistakes an it takes one time . :D

woodsman 06-27-2007 04:44 PM

illss don't take all of this the wrong way like you just said you learned a good lesson and with this wisdom will come. But no one is going to tell another person what he thinks something is worth unless he is looking to buy the piece. Do you see what I am getting at there lots of things on racing junk that may not be what its worth to you but to them its the right asking price. Next time you will be ready at the deal you are working. So hang in there you have just started in the fun.

The ad was not reported because he did not misrepresent it.

Like I said before, and you state your in the auto industry, why didn't you pull the pan, check the motor over before you paid for it and loaded into your van?

a couple hundred in gas and van rental would have been better than what your going through.

popparaces 06-28-2007 03:05 AM

I just wanted to let ilss know,I just put a 350 in a suburban I had. I bought it in long block form from Advance Auto for 1245.00 with a 3yr/150,000 mile warranty. It seems like a well built engine and there were no finger tight rod bolts or anything of that nature. It's not a 400 but it has plenty of power.

Again , did u not read the pm's ?? I put a link for the pm conversation so it was misrepresented . I didnt pull the pan because i didnt want to make it seem like i didnt believe him an plus i believe i asked the same question/s more than once an got same response. So again its my fault an the only REASON im posting in case ur arent reading the thread is to let OTHER forum members or racing JUNK members know this guy is no good an if u want to argue about then go ahead because the fact is he lied about it an thats it . I never said ur guys were enemies so dont assume an if i didnt care then i would let someone else get nailed by him.

Sorry Ills but I clicked that pm link and got a message I am not allowed to view this page.
What you should have done is post the actual pm's in here so we could see them.
If it is in YOUR account I cannot get in to look and neither can ANYONE else.

That is why we have 3 Stickys that say to read before you post, we need all the information, not just what you choose to put in.

I am sorry if you were lied to and I have no way to see that, but that is on you not me.

I am not trying to be a jerk, just letting you know that from what we can see, it was just a bad deal.

Also, just advice for the future, if you buy used take it apart, don't trust a guy just because he says it is what it is, but I think you already learned that one.
